Relationships:
§         We see from the start of the film he is very close with the Maoris. He seeks involvement into the society of the Maori-learns their language, forms genuine friendships, and marks his face as they do.
§         Throughout the film he builds a relationship with Ada.
§         Ada and Baines have a relationship of equality.
§         His relationship becomes more personal as when Ada does not have Flora to speak for her and Baines cannot read, Ada has to mime her actions out for him-gains greater knowledge of understanding of her feeling and actions.
§         His business relationship with Stewart becomes personal through Ada.
 
Symbol:
§         Tattoos- Shows he is a part of Maori society feels he fits in better with them and their lifestyle.
 
Dialogue:
§         Can speak Maori and English although cannot read.
§         “She looks tired” Baines is concerned and worried about Ada when at the beach for the first time-shows that he sees her as a person not an object (Stewart)
§         “I am going to crush his skull” says this after he has found out what Stewart has done to Ada. Show he cares about her and it angers him to see her get hurt. 
 
Actions:
§         Sacrifice-traded land for piano then trades the piano for favours from Ada.
§         Takes Ada back to the beach to play the piano-he wants to make her happy.
§         When at the beach he stands by and watches he is drawn irresistibly to Ada.
§         Gives back the piano after Ada does not tell him that she cares about him as he does for her.
§         Becomes very upset and frustrated when he hears what Stewart has done to Ada.
§         Allows Flora to stay at his home when she is upset over Stewart cutting off her mothers finger-seen as a father figure, gentle and kind nature.
 
 
Setting:
§         His house-in rich forest-lush, green, sunlight on roof in first shot we see of it. It is part of the environment. Shack style-reference to Baines appearance ‘rough around the edges’- isn’t clean cut and proper like Stewart.
 
Costume: 
§         Not very formal-Shows his lifestyle-relaxed, fitting more into the Maori society rather than the traditional Victorian outfits.
 
Camera Shot:
§         Often shown in mid-shot-reference to his genuine relationships with people neither dominant nor insignificant.
